TEACHERS’ SALARIES.
HON. C. J. PARR ON THE REDUCTION QUESTION.
Auckland, Feb. 17. The Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Education, interviewed, said: — “The reduction in teachers’ salaries is not made by the Act passed last month. Last month’s reduction statute empowers the Minister of Education by regulation to reduce teachers’ salaries, and the reduction must therefore be made by Gazette notice. As a matter of fact, the departmental officers and myself have been engaged for the past fortnight on the scheme. I have also taken the opportunity of consulting with , the New Zealand Educational Institute, and have had the benefit of their advice. On Tuesday I finally approved of the scheme. The scheme is a slightly graduated one, beginning at a reduction of £lO, and rising to a £ls maximum. I think teachers will be satisfied. . I have done the best possible for them under the circumstances. These remarks apply only to primary school teachers. Wit’ll regard to secondary and technical schoolmasters .the decreases will be relatively on the same plane. ' f|
