SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the local State School Committee was held •last night. . Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Geo. Coley, W. Pearson, Jno. Ross, M. Perreau and P. Robinson, and the head teacher, Mr Furrie. Correspondence was read from the Board, re repairs to roof and fijyng hat and coat hooks in corridor; also offers for conveying children from the seaside to and from the school had been forwarded on to the Department.

The Oroua Sports Club wrote, asking that in fixing a date for school picnic, that same do not clash with their date.

The Board wrote notifying that Mr Frank C. H. Procter had been appointed a probationer on the stafl of the school.

The Chairman’s action in letting the old school residence was endorsed.

In reference to conveying school children from the seaside to the school, the Chairman said the matter was in the hands of the Department. He did not think the Department would sanction a side school, and the conveyance of the children would be the most satisfactory way to deal with the matter.

It was reported that the Health Officer had visited the school, and had asked for certain improvements to the.sanitary arrangements. The Chairman said these h;yd been carried out.

A letter was read from Mr Fnrrie, head teacher, tendering his resignation, and thanking the Committee for its hearty co-operation. The Chairman said while they regretted to lose Mr Furrie, they were pleased to know that his removal meant promotion. A further opportunity would be afforded the Committee of expressing its appreciation of Mr Eurrie’s work before his departure.

Mr Furrie explained the reason for his acceptance of the headmastership of the Stratford school, and wished the school success in the future.

It was decided to hold over the question of the school picnic for a special meeting.

Messrs Ross and Coley were appointed'visitors for the month, and were instructed to carry out certain minor repairs.

The head master reported that all the members of the staff were present at the re-opening. The roll number for the opening week was 422. Thirty-nine pupils were entered, and 31 left, leaving a gain of 8. The average attendance for the week ending February 3rd (three days) was 395, the highest in the records" ofNthe school for the opening week. During the present week nine more pupils were entered, and five names were removed. Average for the week to date, 409 —eight over number required to raise school to grade 6A. - “I do not think this can be maintained for the year, unless the roll rises to at least 440. Mr Frank Procter has been appointed a probationer on the staff, and took up his duties on Tuesday, 17th inst. The staff now comprises head master, seven certificated assistants, one pupil teacher, and one probationer. “During last year I wrote to the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts, asking for pictures of New Zealand tourist resorts. The manager kindly forwarded three sets, each containing six photographs. The pictures are forwarded on condition that they are framed and hung in the school. Messrs Ross and C. Pearson have kindly offered the - picture of the Maori chief won in the last fete art union. This will make a valuable addition to the school pictures.”
