A POLICEMAN’S HOLIDAY.
AND A GOOD CATCH. AT THE MANAWATU HEADS. Even on a holiday Constable Owen is always on duty, and many a lawbreaker has been brought to justice by representatives of our' splendid force while in mufti. Anyhow, our local senior constable, Mr Owen, is on his annual leave, which he is spending in a sequestered, nook at the seaside, inhaling the ozone what time he is not splashing in the briny and hooking herrings. On Tuesday evening he was accosted by a Beach resident in the person of Mr S. Davey, and the hurried movements of the couple along the foreshore to the mouth of the river aroused the interest of several per- „ sons, who, scenting something sensational, followed. The burly couple ' were seen to- make for a- row boat, and one immediately pulled out, while the other remained ashore grasping a rope. The boat described a half-circle, the while a net was dropped astern. Coming ashore, both men hauled at the rope, and there was great commotion in the water. The pair had raided a kawhai school, and succeeded in capturing three to four hundred. The captives were taken into safe custody, searched and sorted. The fish are now doing time in the smoke hatch, preparatory to the final sentence provided by appetising meals for numerous officials, including the press representatives. Constable Owen and his stalwart comrade are proud of the fact that they have made the catch of the season.
