FATAL MISADVENTURE

MAN TAKES CAUSTIC SODA. IN MISTAKE FOR SOUP. A misadventure which terminated fatally occurred at Levin on January 20th. Mrs Findlay, wife of Mr William Findlay, had dissolved some caustic soda in a cup, with the intention of making soap. Her husband understood her to say she was making soup, and on entering the room picked'np the cup and drank the contents. He was terribly burned, and became seriously ill. A doctor was summoned, and ordered his removal to the Palmerston Hospital, where he lingered until Saturday last, when he succumbed. The matter has been reported to the police, and an inquest will be held. The deceased was 69 years of age.
