ASSAULT ON A CHILD.
penalty imposed. r i At the Palmerston Police Court yesterday, William Snow, a burly man of the labouring type, aged about 40 years, was charged that on January 4th, at Palmerston, he did assault a female child aged eleven years.
Accused did not enter a definite plea of guilty. He admitted placing hands on the child. The girl deposed that she was left in charge of her younger brother and sister at home. At about 3.30 p.m. accused came and asked for a drink of milk and water. Witness went to the door at the back of the house and accused, she alleged, placed hands on her. In answer to the Bench, accused said he put his hands on the child, but did not harm her. He did not wish to ask any questions or to give, evidence.
Senior-Sergeant Fraser stated that the man was not fit to be at large. He was a danger to the community. ' The Bench, in sentencing accused to the maximum penalty provided for an aggravated assault upon E a child —six months’ imprisonment with hard labour —said the Court Allowed the offence as being of an aggravated nature. The community must be protected from such men as accused. It was the opinion of the Court that he should be put away by the State for a considerable period. The Court was of the opinion that it was a bad case.
