BEACH NOTES.
A most successful evening was spent by a number of Beach residents and holiday-iqakers at the Beach Hall on Saturday evening, when a dance was held in aid of the Beach Improvement Funds.
During the evening various items were contributed by the following: Songs by Mr and Miss Dally, and fancy dancing by Mrs N. Wai’drop. The oi’ganising and controlling of the dance was in the capable hands of a committee consisting of- Messrs Brance, Burrell, Hankins and F. Stockwell, who spent a great deal of time in prepai-ing the fiooi’, etc. The above committee intend holding a series of dances in aid of the Improvement Committee during the season. A large number of people visited the Beach on Sunday last, and in spite of an unpleasant westerly, a very enjoyable time was spent, the water being ideal for bathing. Motorists complain bitterly about the bad state of the Beach road, which has to be traversed at a low rate of speed, owing to the dangerous pot-holes. One driver says the three miles to the Beach takes more out of his ear than the 25 miles from Palmerston, On being told that if was not fair - that the Awahou Riding should bear the cost of maintenance of this road, which was used principally by outside motorists, he suggested a toll-gate. But this would impose a double impost on ratepayers and Beach residents ,who pay rates plus 12s fid per year for maintenance. Anyhow, the road requires attention.
The Boy Scouts are enjoying their camp life, and are given plenty of exercise on the hills.
