THE PALMERSTON DEVIATION.
The cost of the recent Royal Commission on the proposed railway deviation at Palmerston North was £746 7s lid. This fact was disclosed in a return presented to the House of Representatives on the motion of .Mr \\. H. Field (Otaki). The chief items were £l6l 14s paid to each of the three Commissioner', and .£16!) 16s Uhl paid to Me-srs Bell, Gully. Myers and Cl.earv as legal expenses. The finding of tin 1 Commission justified the Palmerston railway deviation as against the linking up of the Main Trunk line between Marion and Great ford and Levin, which would relieve the Ira Hie at Palmerston, and shorten the journey between Auckland and Wellington by almost two hours. The Government has decided to go on with the Palmerston deviation, at some indefinite period, which will probably be in about live years time —unless Mr Nash makes it 100 hot for them in the meantime!
