WANGANUI TOURNAMENT
Forty rinks took pnrt in the annual Christmas tournament conducted by the Wanganui Centre this year, clubs as far north as New Plymouth, and as far south as Palmerston N. and Foxton being represented. On the first day the weather conditions were not favourable, there being a very tricky wind, which rendered accurate howling practically impossible, but for the remainder of the tournament the weather was ideal. The greens were in splendid order, and the play generally was of a high standard. The management of the tournament left nothing to be desired, and if any of .the howlers taking part failed to enjoy themselves it was through no fault of the Wanganui officials. The entries were divided into live sections, and seven games were played in each section. The Foxton rink played in D Section, and at the conclusion of the play had five wins and two losses, thus winning their section. In the semi-finals they were drawn against Jones, of Palmerston N., and after a keenly contested game were defeated by six points. Jones won his other two games in the semi-finals, and was only beaten in the final by two points. The following are the details of the games in which the Foxton rink took part:—
Bartlett, Williamson, Wall, Anderson (s), Wanganui, 21 —11. Crocket, Smith, Pawson, Corby (s) Gonville, 19 —15.
Bowater (s), Wanganui, 19—22. Hayward, Gilbert, Upton, Rice (s), St. Johns, 20 —16. Johnston, McLaggan Allan, Spurdle (s), Inglewood, 18 —19. Fox, Hawkins, Young, Sampson (s), Waifnra, 26 —12. Brown, Fairhill, Beadle, McNeil (s), Fitzroy, 24 —16.
Rowling, Dixon, Fraser, Jones (s), 16—22. The final between Jones’ rink and Tilley’s (Wanganui) rink was a very evenly contested game, the scores being even on (he 10th, 12th, 14th and 16th heads, and Tilley eventually won by 19 points to 17. Tilley’s rink was comprised of Ileddilch, Sliewan, London, Tilley (s). London, who played third for Tilley, has skipped the winning rink in the Wanganui tournament on four occasions, 19.12, 1916, 1918, and 1920, Tilley playing second for him in 1916, and third in 1918 and 1920. London, with Tilley as third, also skipped the winning rink at the Dominion tournament in 1919.
