BOROUGH COUNCIL.
SPECIAL MEETING
A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last night to consider Ibe appointment of a gas manager.
Those present were Councillors Bryant, Whibley, Smith, Ross, Marlin, Thompson, Walker and Coley. In ihe absence of the Mayor, Cr. Walker was voted to the chair. A letter was read from Mr George Davis, the recently appointed working gas manager, declining the position. • Cr. Walker said that something must be done, as Mr Kennerlev’s time expires on Ibe 31st of Ibe month.
Cr. Whibley said that Mr Kennerley would have to wait until the position was filled. He would like to have the applications reviewed again. Cr, Thompson agreed with Cr. Whibley.
Crs. Ross and Coley said fresh applications should be called.
Cr. Walker said in that case I bey would have to ask MrTvennerley to remain until bis successor had been appointed.
Cr. Bryant moved that fresh applications be called for the position. Seconded by Cr. Coley. Cr. Smith supported the motion. He said there may have been some who missed the first application, and by calling fresh applications a better man than the one recently appointed might apply. Cr. Ross supported the motion. Tie said the present manager could be retained for two months in accordance with the conditions of his appointment. Cr. Whibley moved an amendment that, the applications previously lodged be reconsidered, and an appointment, made. Seconded l>v Cr. Martin.
C!r. Bryant said that seeing the Council could hold the present manager for two months, there was plenty of time, and that fresh applied ions should bo called.
Cr. Martin objected to the motion. ITc said that it: was not fair, and that it was wasting the Council's money by advertising for fresh applications. The Council was making a laughing stock of itself by doing so.
Cr. Whibley said that a week ago thirteen applications for the position had been received. The Council had advertised from one end of Now Zealand to the other. Had Mr Davis not applied, one of the remaining twelve would have been selected at last meeting. Why should the Council not decide on one of llic previous applications to-night He considered the motion would cause an unnecessary waste ot
money
The Council then went into committee, and on resuming, the motion was carried, Crs Whibley and Rand voting against it. Cr. Smith moved that applications close on the 16th January, 1022. —Carried.
