AEROPLANE VISITS FOXTON.
The first landing of an aeroplane in Foxton took place at 1.30 this aftefnoon, in Messrs Robinson Bros.’ property, at the rear of Mr Edwards’ home in tfie Lady’s Mile. The whirring of the propeller announced the machine overhead, coming from a northerly direction. It made towards the river, and circled round the borough, finally making for the landing ground, where it made a safe descent..
Horses were greatly startled at the noise as they gazed upward at the machine.
•Numbers of people made their way to the'Lady’s Mile, and inspected the machine.
The machine is an Avro aero limousine, 100 h.p., and is owned by the N.Z. Aero Transport Coy., with headquarters at Timarn. The pilot is Mr J. C. Mercer, who is accompanied by Mr Ranish, mechanic. The machine left Eeilding at 1 p.m., and arrived at Foxton at 1.23. On the brief trip several rain squalls were run into, the worst being over Glen Oroua .
An excellent landing was effected, and Mr Mercer informed our representative that he was pleased with the site selected for (his purpose.
A special feature of the machine is that if affords passengers protection front the weather, having a limousine top—the only machine of ils kind in Ihe Dominion. Accommodation is provided for two passengers besides 1 the pilot and mechanic.
The machine will remain in Foxlon 10-day and to-morrow, and will make, passenger flights, particulars of wjiicli are advertised elsewhere in flits issue.
