CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
QUARTERLY MEETING
The quarterly meeting of the nbove was held on Tuesday night. The president (Mr Hornblow) occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. HAWKERS’ LICENSES.
The question of recommending the Borough Council to increase hawkers’ license fees, held over from last meeting, was briefly discussed, and it was pointed out that the maximum fee was fixed under the Act, and that no further action could be taken.
CORRESPONDENCE
was received from the Nelson Chamber of Commerce, enclosing map showing gap in railway communication which is required to connect Nelson district with the South Island main line. —Received. From Minister of Lands, acknowledging Chamber’s resolution in connection with forest conservation in the Urewera Country, and promising to give the matter attention. From Mangahno llydro : Eleetric League, providing progress report. —Resolved that Ihe Chamber express its appreciation of the work of the League in keeping local bodies in touch with this important undertaking. From local stationmasfer, in reply re facilitating delivery of goods to consignees from ship’s side, and stating that goods were handled as per arrangement with the ship’s agent, and no complaint had been received re delay. —Received. The local sub-branch of the Plunket Society wrote soliciting a donation.—Decided to grant one guinea. Mr A. N. Smith, the delegate appointed to attend the conference of the Associated Chambers at Christchurch, reviewed the remits passed, and was accorded a vote of thanks. A letter was read from the secretary of the Associated Chambers, asking for nominations of suitable men for appointment to a Royal Commission proposed to he set, up to inquire into the incidence of taxation. It was decided to write, opposing the setting up of a Royal Commission for the purposes pecified.
The Mayor (Air Chrystall) asked for an expression of opinion from the Chamber in reference to an amendment to the Harbours Act to enable Harbour Boards to raise loans for the purchase or charter of steamers. He said the local Harbour Board was up against it by reason of dearth of shipping, and such amendment to existing legislation would enable Boards to provide necessary shipping and so improve j heir finances. —lt was decided to support the Boards’ action in this connection.
Accounts totalling £9 4s 2d were passed for payment, SUBSCRIPTIONS TN ARREARS.
Air Smith asked what steps were being taken to collect members’ overdue subscriptions. The secretary said Ihe usual notices had been sent, —Rev. Walton gave notice of motion to amend rule dealing with members’ overdue subscriptions.
