Entries close at 9 o’clock to-night for the local Horticultural Society’s Summer Show, which opens in the Town Hall on Thursday nexT. Late entries up to noon to-morrow.

At last night’s Council meeting it was moved that the sympathy of the Council he extended to Cr. and Mrs Rami, Mr R. Rand, senr., and family, and Mr and Mrs Cresswcll, and that letters of sympathy he sent to them in their recent sad bereavement. The motion was carried in the usual manner.

Those present at last night’s Council meeting were: His Worship the Mayor (John Chrystn.il, Esq.), and Councillors Bryant, Whiblcy, Rand, Smith, Ross, Martin, Thompson, and Walker. An apology was received from Cr. Coley. Mr Bergin, on behalf of Mr Easton, Mr Climie, Borough engineer, and Mr 11. Hamer, captain of the Eire Brigade, were also in attendance.

Special services were held in the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches on Sunday last, when addresses on the subject of liquor in relation to child life were delivered by Mr H. Grinstead, divisional secretary of the N.Z. Alliance, and at Shannon last night. To-night Mr Grinstead will speake in the Methodist Church, to which the public are cordially invited. The l'’oxton Auctioneering Coy. reports that at last Saturday’s mart sale the following prices were realised: —Meaner pigs 14s 6d, 17s; roosters, Is 2d, Is Gd, Is 7d, 2s 9d each; hens, 2s Gd each; silver Wyandotte chicks, Is 4d each; lien and 10 W.II. chicks, 15s. Entries for next Saturday’s sale are invited.

The funeral of the late Mrs R. Rand took place on Sunday, and was attended by a large number of mourners. The easel;! was covered with floral tributes. The ceremony at All Saints’ Church and the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Walton. The deceased lady leaves a husband and family of two sons and four daughters (Messrs C. and R. Rand, Mesdames Morgan, Lee, Hurst, and Miss Rand) to mourn their loss.

A valuable gift lias been made to tho capital fund of Knox College, Dunedin. A generous anonymous donor, who makes an annual eontri'bulion of £OOO to the endowment fund of the college, has expressed the intention of permanently capitalising this by a gift of £12,000. The donor has also expressed the wish that the £OOO should be used so as to increase the salary of Professor TTewitson. The Presbyterian Assembly has taken the necessary steps to give effect to these wishes.

A Palmerston North lad. Charles Humphrey Bennett, aged 14 years, met with a serious accident at Tiakitahnna on Sunday morning, says the M.D. Times. He and two others were cycling to Fox ton at the time, and Bennett, it is understood, was hanging on to the side of a motor lorry, when a stone, dislodged by (he lorry’s wheels, upset the cycle. The unfortunate lad was thrown under the lorry, a wheel passing over one of his legs. His injuries ..consisted of a fractured leg, two.fractured ribs, and a number of bruises. ITe_ was rendered unconscious. Dr. Hunter Will was summoned, and Bennett was removed to the Palmerston Hospital. A meeting of those responsible for the ball held in the Town Hall last week was held last night, when the question of disposing of the balance of the funds was considered. The takings at \he ball were £43 10s, and the expenses £39 18s, leaving a balance to credit of £3 12s, It was decided that a donation of £1 Is for a trophy be given to the Tennis Club, and the balance, £2 11s, be given to the general fund of the Football Club. A vote of thanks was passed to the following for their generous assistance in connection with the ball: Mesdames Small and Roore, Misses Jacobsen and Small, and Mr J. Desmond.
