PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS.
ABOLITION URGED
A matter of interest to the whole community was brought up at Saturday’s meeting of the Manawatu sub-provincial executive of the Purifiers’ Union, when the chairman (Mr A. Buchanan) moved: “That preference to unionists has proved, ruinous to unionists of all classes, and is injuring our meat export trade through the extravagant awnrd rates at the freezing works and the careless dressing of the meat there.”’ Mr Atkin (Manakau) suggested that the Government should be urged to take a referendum on the subject. He believed that the Government would welcome a lead in the matter from the farmers of the country. Tic was confident that the abolition of preference to unionists would receive a pretty big measure of support from the workers themselves. The latter’s eyes had been opened to the disadvantages of the present state of affairs.
Mr Buchanan did not press his motion, withdrawing it in favour of a resolution by Mr Atkin for transmission to the provincial union, calling on the Government to take a referendum on the subject, in the event of Parliament not dealing with the question this session. This was carried unanimously.
