TAXATION.
In his speech on the Budget in the House yesterday, the Premier said Ihe taxation per head in New Zealand was 8s 9d, while in Australia the Federal tax was 8s Gd, and to this had to be added the State taxes, varying from 7d in Victoria to 3s Gd in Queensland. The company tax was under consideration. Si far as he could see, if they reduced Ihe company tax, they must increase the income tax, and vice v.ersa. Referring to Ihe tariff, he believed it would be found to lie generally satisfactory. ITe had never known a tariff that bad elecited so lilth criticism. ITe quoted a letter from a boot manufacturer, who declared that it afforded ample protection to (be industry. The Oovernmonf wngoing to ask Parliament to give an onnortunity to negotiate with Australia regarding duties. He agreed with much that had been said about (lie Australian tariff wall.
