Referring to the race, the Times spoiling writer says: — “On all hands, the Stead Memorial Gold Cup was regarded as next to a certainly for Amythas. As usual, he did not move at all attractively in his preliminary, hut Winning Hit strode out particularly well. The Hawk acted as pacemaker for more than three-quart-ers of the journey, with Winning Hit and Amythas handy. Racing round the top turn, Amythas made a forward move, but Winning Hi! responded lo if. When well into line for home. Amytlms again flattered his supporters, and before reaching the distance he had The Hawk’s measure, and gradually overhauled Winning Hit. Excitement was keen as I he, favourite, under pressure, gradually made up his leeway. He responded very generously, hut just failed to get up by half a length. It was a remarkable effort on the part of both Winning Hit and Amythas, as they covered the journey in 2min. 3 1-5 sec., which constitutes an Australasian record.
