COST OF A COMMISSION.
A statement made in the Auckland Star that the cost of the Racing Commission was £IB,OOO was referred to by the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. Downie Stewart) in the House of Representatives last week. “I wish,” lie said, ”to give a denial to that statement.” It seemed to him most mischievous that such statements should be made without inquiry. As a matter of fact the total amount expended on the Commission was £4,374 11s 9d, to which might be added a supplementary voucher coming forward for £23. The Commission, therefore, would not cost more than £4,400, which was an entirely different story to that circulated.
