RETURN OF INCOME.
FINES FOR BREACHES OF ACT.
At, the Palmerston Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., the Commissioner of Taxes (Mr Grant) proceeded against several people for failing to render a return of income. Several of the defendants did not put in an appearance.
In the case against S. W, Carter, farmer, Mr Grant stated that since the issuing of the summons, a late assessment had been supplied. Defendant was fined £5, with 7s costs. 11. F. W. Hansen, store keeper, stated counsel, had not supplied an income tax return since 1911. A default assessment had been made showing the amount (Jue as tax as £5 12s. The Magistrate inflicted a fine of £lO, with 7s costs, in this ease. It was stated in connection with the case against S. G. 11. Hall, dentist, .that defendant had never made a return, and by a default assessment that had been made it was calculated that he owed £1,500 to the department. Defendant was mulcted in the sum of £lO and 7s costs.
11. J. Eames, dentist, admitted that no return had been made by him for the past year. Mr Grant stated that in this instance no payment was due. A fine of £2, with: 7s costs, was inflicted. —Standards
