Considerable increases are made in the Customs tariff, which was introduced in the House of Representatives on Thursday night, and adopted without debate. The new tariff came into operation yesterday. Included among the items affected are the following, the former tariff being in parentheses: — Chicory, new tariff 5s per lb. (3d per lb).
Cocoa, 5d per lb. (3d per lb). Coffee (roasted), 5d per lb. (3d per lb). Coffee essence, 35 per cent. (20 per cent).
Fruit pulps, 35 per cent. (20 per cent). Tea in bulk, 5d per lb. (3d per lb). Tea, n.e.i., 7d per lb. (5d per/lb). Biscuits, 3d per lb. (2d per lb). Blue, 2d per lb. (Id per lb). Candles, 2ld per lb. (lid per lb). Confectionery, 3d per lb. (2d per lb).
Chocolate, 5d per lb. (3d per lb). Preserved fish, 3d per lb. (2d per lb).
Preserved fruit (in juice), 40 per cent. (25 per cent). Malt extract, 35 per cent. (20 per cent).
Potted meats 35 per cent. (20 per cent). Mustard, 2d per lb. (free). Candied peel, 5d per lb. (3d per lb).
Matches (wax), 2s per gross (Is per gross.). Matches (wooden), 2s per gross (Is per gross). Soap, 45 per cent. (20 per cent). Salt, 15 per cent. (free). Sugar, id peril), (free).
Treacle, Id per lb. (free). Tobacco (fine cut), 10s per lb. (3s per lb); cut, n.e.i., 5s per lb (3s (id per lb); plug, including weight of label or tag, 4s (id per lb. (3s fid per lb).
Spirits, 3fis per gal. (18s per gal.).
Wine, 3(is per gal. (18s per gal.). Acetic acid, 2]d per lb. (lid per lb.).
Vinegar, 9d per gal. (fid per gal.). Baking powder, 35 per cent. (20 per cent.). Cream of tartar, 20 per cent, (free). Essences, 3(>s per gal. (18s per gal.). , Glycerine, 10 per cent. (free). Medicinal preparations, 35 per cent. (20 per cent.). Saccharin, 35 per cent. (20 per eenl.). Surgical instruments, 10 per cent, (free). Sewing cottons, 10- per cent, (free). \ Textile piece-goods, 35 per cent, (free). Elastic; 10 per cent. (free). Bootlaces, 35 per cent. (221 per cent.).
Carpets, 35 per cent. (20 per cent.). Laces and ribbons, 35 per cent. (20 per cent.). Rugs, 35 per cent. (20 per cent.). Tarpaulins, etc., 35 per cent. (20 per cent.). Umbrellas, 35 per cent. (20 per cent.).
Drapery, 35 per eenl. (20 per cent.).
Apparel, 60 per cent. (40 per cent.). Millinery, 40 per cent. (25 per cent.). Boots and shoes, 20 per cent. (10 per cent.). Saddlery, 35• per cent. (30 per eenl.).
Rubber tyres, 25 per cent. (free). Bottles, 10 percent, (free). Glass, 10 per cent. (371 per cent.) China, 35 per cent. (30 per cent.). Drain pipes, 35 per cent. (30 per cent.).
Earthenware, 35 per cent. (30s per cent.). Artists’ materials, 15 per cent. (10 per cent.). Fancy goods, 35 per cent. (30 per cent.).
.Jewellery, 35 per cent. (30 per cent.).
Tobacco pipes, 35 per cent. (30 per cent.).
Lead piping, 5s per cwt. (4s 2d per cwt.). A large number of alterations have also been made in the tariff on machinery, etc. The duty on tobacco manufactured in New Zealand, and on cigarettes manufactured in New Zealand, is as follows: —On tobacco cut, 2s Gd per lb.; on tobacco fine cut, Gs 3d per lb.; on other tobacco, 2s per lb.; on cigarettes,- Gs Gd per lb. The duties given above are subject to the British preferential tariff.
