CROQUET.

The Levin Chronicle says, in referring to the official opening of the new croquet courts at Levin on Monday last: —

Despite the state of the weather yesterday, it was decided to officially open the Levin croquet season, a fair number of local and visiting players being present. The president of the Club, Mrs Kirk, said they were pleased to sec s'o many present, especially friends from the Foxton Club. They had reached a very gratifying stage in the life of the club, as that day they were opening their new lawns. Croquet was a game that was becoming more popular every year, and any town now of importance had its croquet club, so that they felt their lawns were an asset to the town of Levin, and were pleased to welcome new members, both gentlemen and ladies, to the club. The president took the opportunity of thanking the members of the Bowling Club, who had helped croquet in years past by giving players the privilege of using part of their green, and' although Ihe Croquet Club was a little further away, they hoped the good feeling that had existed between- the two/ clubs would continue. So many people had helped in securing the new lawn: First she would mention Mrs Nicholson, the retiring secretary, who last year did so much in the business of buying the property, and also the club’s incorporation and rules. They were indebted, too, to the bowlers and friends who had given help (sometimes from unexpected quarters), and special mention must be made of Mr Channings, who not only supervised the laying down of the lawns, but gave so much work in his holiday time. On behalf of the Club, the president thanked heartily all kind friends. The greens were then declared open. The occasion was taken to return to the Foxton Club with a pair of silver badges for play in their club, by Mr's Kirk and Mrs Lancaster.

It is the intention of the local Club to arrange a challenge match with Levin for the Hornblow Badges in about two weeks time. All players wishing to make the journey on that occasion should notify Mrs Pearson (secretary).
