Addressing Hie electors of Auckland East, Mr Clutha McKenzie, the Government candidate, in urging the need for, economy, said Mr Massey would fulfil all his promises. He suggested a limited express on the Main Trunk line, the abolition of long stops for meals, substituting the English system of cold luncheon baskets. He advocated closer settlement, and defended the Government againsl the charge of responsibility for the unemployment. In advocating forestry, he said that in mapping out new country, the first to east eyes over it should he forestry and agricultural officials, to decide what was required for forestry and water conservation, and what was best for agriculture. The candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.

The Hon. G. W. Russell, Liberal and Opposition candidate, who is seeking to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr A. Myers, the late Liberal member, is up against if, but is putting up a strenuous fight. Mr J. A.
