The local State School will observe Monday (Labour Day) as a public holiday. Feilding has decided to hold over the proposal to raise funds for the establishment of a St. Helen’s Hospital for twelve months. We regret to record the death of Mrs Hosking, which took place at her residence, Avenue Road, on Wednesday night, after a lingering illness. The interment took place at Palmerston N. to-day. It is not uncommon to dig local-ly-grown potatoes in November, but it v is Very rare that a crop is successfully raised in October. Mr C. Ingram, of Coley Street, brought us a fine sample of an early crop yesterday, of the red variety.

The Borough Council invite tenders for removal of rubbish within the borough to the ngw rubbish depot. On Saturday next the Foxton Auctioneering Company will submit by auction a freehold property (one acre and 5-roomed house) in Coley Street, on behalf of Mr W. Johnson, Particulars will be advertised later.

A Festal Fair, held in the Maoriland Theatre, Shannon on Thursday, in aid of the Methodist Church funds, netted some £BO. £3O of this amount will be contributed towards the whole of 'the Foxton-Sliannon circuit. The balance will be used for repainting and general renovating the church at Shannon. It is believed that 12,000 Maoris of all shades of opinion will be present at Ratana’s great meeting at Christmas time at Turakina. Great preparations for the housing and victualling of (he visitors are already in progress. The place will be a veritable canvas town. A conference of the Federated School Committees Association of New Zealand will open in the Education -Board’s office, Wellington, on Tuesday next. Messrs Ilornblow, G. 11. Stiles and Le Grange will represent the Manawatu district.

A man named John Neilson, aged 72 years, who had set out from Pahiatua to Palmerston North across the hills, was found in an old house at Ballance Valley road in an emaciated state. For 15 days he had subsisted only on a few odd vegetables he found in the habitation. Neilson, who has no relatives in the Dominion, was removed to the Pahiatua Hospital.

Mr. W. F. Greenwood, agricultural instructor, has inspected a variety of swamp grass growing on Mr F. S. Easton’s property at Moutoa, and known as “water poa”.

This grass has been found to grow luxuriantly in the swampy country at Moutoa and is recognised as a good fattening fodder. An inquiry lias been received from Westland as to the properties of the water poa, with a view to introducing it to that part of the South Island, where there are large tracts of swamp and peat country. Mr Matthews, who, prior to his transfer to the Samoan wireless station, twelve months ago, was a member of the local post office staff, returned to Foxton this week. Mr Matthews says his twelve months service at Samoa was very interesting, and he enjoyed the best of health. While there, he met Mr and Mrs Hutton (late of Foxton). Mr Hutton is employed in the Public Works Department. He also came across Mr G. P. Brown, late of the “Levin Chronicle,” and who now edits the Samoan paper, published once a week. He also brought greetings from a nephew of Mr Ilornblow, who has been connected with the wireless station for some time.

Mrs Hodgson will also be greatly missed, she having been one of our best and hardest workers in practically all local functions, always showing interest in anything for the welfare of the town. Otaki’s lass will, however, be Carterton’s gain.” \

A Pahiatna business man who recently indented a crate of crockery from England at a purchase price of £l7, found that freight and other charges came to £27 10s. Following the decision of the Wellington Education Board to set aside half an hour a week for religious instruction in schools, Professor Hunter, of Victoria College, notified his objection to his hoy being detained in school at secular work while other pupils were receiving religious The chairman said if it was found tliat the Board’s position was untenable, the regulation would have to he altered. It was decided to obtain legal opinion.

It is rumoured there is a likelihood of a fellmongery being started locally. The firm that has the matter in hand, in considering sites, had suitable properties offered in Levin and Foxton, and it is considered that Foxton, being a port, that project was likely to pay better if established here, as against an inland town. The projected site is the Whakapai fiaxmill property, an inspection of which has already beer, made.

Notice is given elsewhere in this issue that the petition praying that the boroughs/ of Foxton, Levin, Shannon and Otaki, the County of Ilorowhenua, and the Weraroa, Riding of the Hutt County, and portion of the Awahou Riding of the Manawatu County, he constituted an electric power district, will be presented to His Excellency the Go-vernor-General within a month from date. Also that a copy of the petition has been deposited at the of each of the local authorities, and will be open for inspection during the usual office hours.

Two machine-guns have been received by the Borough Council, comprising part of the war trophies allocated-to Foxton. One (a Krupp) is mounted on the usual bipod, and stands about 3ft. Gin. high. Botli guns are water-cooled, although the Hotchkiss gun has a very low stand, so that when in use it stands only 15 inches above the ground, this alone securing much more protection to the gunner, who can lie full length on the ground. Both guns have seen considerable service, the Krupp gun being captured by the Ist Battery N.Z.F. Artillery on the Ist April, 1918. A field gun has also been allotted to Foxton, and this is expected to come to hand shortly.
