Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1921. FULL-TIME SCHOOLS.
THE Wanganui School Committees Association forwarded the following resolution to the Wanganui Education Board, which was adopted by the Board at its last meeting:—“The Association requests the Board to co-operate in preventing schools from closing to enable scholars to attend travelling lectures, picture shows, etc., and that in future such applications be referred to committees.” It is high time the school authorities took a firm stand against travelling showmen exploiting the schools for private gain, and incidentally wasting time with requests for early closing, which if acceded to without good and sufficient cause, means not only loss to the pupils, but the squandering of public money. Every minute of school time wasted means the loss of hundreds of pounds to the State. Not only should restrictions be placed upon the closing of schools for travelling entertainers, but the same should apply to indiscriminate reduced hours for staff or pupils. We complain that the Education grant is inadequate, and if that be so, financial leakages in time-squandering should be put a stop to.
