ANTE NATAL CLINICS.
A question that had been very fully discussed recently by the Board of Health, said Sir .Jas. Wilson at the meeting of the Hospital Board on Thursday, was the establishment of ante-natal clinics. It. had been stated that a great deal of the mortality among mothers could be prevented if sufficient care bad been taken prior to confinement, when it was most advisable that prospective mothers should consult a doctor, so that any abnormality could be detected and rectified in time. It hlionld be more widely known that ante-natal clinics lmd already boon established at all SI. Helen’s Hospitals in the Dominion, and the board recognised the need of establishing a clinic at all ordinary hospitals, and so be in a position to avert dangerous complications. He had consulted with Dr. Forrest and the matron on the matter, and as a result arrangements had already been made for the establishment of a clinic in Palmerston. Perhaps it would not he taken advantage of to any great extent at first, but it would be the means of saving lives. Other members expressed themselves entirely in favour of the scheme, and.it was resolved to establish a clinic as suggested, payment for advice to he optional, according to the circumstances of the patient.
