RACES IN THE UNITED STATES
TIIE total population of I ho United Stales, aeo.ordin"g'"*'to (lie reeent census ,is 105,710,020. Of these, 04,822,431 are classified as white; 10,403,013 as negro; 111,025 as Japanese, and 01,080 as Chinese; 242,050 as American Indians; and 0,500 as “miscellaneous.’' such as Eskimos and Malays. Thus, on the average, in every 100,000 persons 80,700 are white, 0,000 are hlaek, 230 are red, and 175 are yellow. The distribution of the coloured races is not uniform. If the country is divided into three sections, north, south, and west, it is found that the black men are in the south, while the yellow ones are in the west. The Indians do not. permit any such categorical statement. In the “north” there are 00,000 aborigines; the total of the South is 75,000; and the remaining 108,000 are in the “West.” The South, comprising everything south of the Mason and Dixon line and (lie northern line of Arkansas and Oklahoma, has 27 per cent, of its people negroes, and the remaining 73 per cent. —neglecting the few of other races —white. For the North barely 2 per cent, of the population is black, and for the West a bare 8 per 1,000. Two States have a, majority of their residents from the black race —South Carolina and Mississippi. The latter shows the larger proportion, with 04 negroes to 85 whites, or 52 per cent, black, i
This is one of the States showing a decrease in population for the decade since 1910, and this decrease is attributable to the black-popula-tion having fallen off by 74,000, while the whites were increasing by G,BOO. The Indian bulks the largest in Arizona, where there are three red men to every 25 whites — the Indians constituting very close to 10 per cent, of the whole population. California has two yellow men to every 05 whites; that is to say, the Oriental races constitute a trifle less than 3 per cent, of the State’s total.
