Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1921. METAL WEIGHT AND MEASUREMENT.
CR. COLEY is not satisfied with the Council’s present, method of purchasing road metal for the borough’s requirements, and has endeavoured, unsuccessfully, to bring about a change in the system. The cost of metal for borough road maintenance is a very heavy item, for the reason that Foxton does not possess any metal pits, and road material has, therefore, to be obtained and conveyed by rail from Palmerston, Rangitikei and Belmont. Such being (lie case, it naturally follows that due care should be exercised to see that'the full quantities ordered are delivered. Cr. Coley, as a practical man, expresses doubt on this point. The borough overseer is of opinion that the quantities received work out. satisfactory on the average. Cr. Coley urges that metal should be purchased by weight, and suggests that the basis be 271 cwl. to the cubic yard. A big linn of metal contractors work - on the following scale: River shingle, 28 cwl. to the yard; line sand, one lon to the yard; coarse, heavy sand, 22 owl.; metal 21 inches, broken, 24 cwl.; metal screenings, 22 cwt.; rotten rock, 20 cwt. The above averages should be a. guide lo the Council.
