CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
REPLIES TO RECENT COMMUNICATIONS.
The local Chamber of Commerce has received the following replies to recent communications forwarded to the Minister for Finance re borough water and drainage loan, and to the Manawatu County Council, re Beach road: —
WATER AND DRAINAGE SCHEME.
“I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 3rd instant relative to the above matter, and note what you say. In reply, I have to inform you that owing to the large demands being made at the present time on the funds of the State Advances Department for urgent and essential works, the members of the Board recently found it necessary to reduce the amount that might be borrowed during any one financial year from £IO,OOO to £5,000. I understand that the sum of £IO,OOO has already granted and paid over by the State Advances Department, and that an application has now been made for a further £5,000. N 'lVhen the financial position shows some improvement no doubt the limit by the State Advances Board will be increased, but. at the present time I am unable to give you any definite promise in this direction. However, there is no reason why the Borough should not endeavour to raise a further portion of the loan elsewhere, and so more speedily complete the scheme. —Yours faithfully, W. MASSEY. Minister of Finance.”
BEACH ROAD.
“Your letter of 2nd ultimo was considered at last meeting of the Council. The Council is having an inspection made of the road, and the report will be placed before next meeting of the Council. The repairs to culvert have already been effected. The total general rates collected from the Beach ratepayers only amounts to £0 4s 3d per annum, and this does not go far in keeping the road in order. This means that the balance of cost comes out of the Riding funds. With reference to the straightening of the road giving access to the foreshore, this matter will be reported on, but from information available at present, it will not be possible to do this work. —Yours truly, A. Iv. DREW, County Clerk.”
