BOWLING.

OPENING OF LOCAL GREEN

Despite the unfavourable weather during the past few days,, the local Club was favoured yesterday with a fine day for the official opening of the green. As a result of strenuous work on the part of a number of members during the morning, the green was put into very satisfactory state of preparation for the afternoon’s play, the green playing remarkably well considering the circumstances. A large number of visitors were present, including bowlers from {Shannon, Levin and Palmesrton N . There was also a large attendance.of ladies, including visiting croquet players from Levin. The President of the Bowling Club, Mr R. Bryant, in declaring the green open for play, extended a hearty welcome to visiting bowlers, and hoped they would have a pleasant afternoon’s play. He also read a telegram from the Secretary/of the Terrace End Bowling Club, regretting inability of members of that club to be present. Mr T. M. Will'ord, in reply to an invitation to b.e present, telegraphed liis regret at being unable to attend. The President exhibited a handsome silver cup, which he explained Mr Will'ord had, as an appreciation of the hospitality shown him by bowlers during his stay in Foxton last season, presented for competition among members of the local club. Mrs Bryant delivered the first bowl, amid applause. Ten. rinks occupied the green, and the following are the results of the play:—

Fargher (s) Id Trott (s) 17 A splendid afternoon tea was dispensed by the members of the Ladies’ Croquet Club, which was fully appreciated by those present. At (he conclusion of play, thanks were returned by representatives of visiting clubs, and lusty cheers given for the hospitality offered by the ladies.

On Wednesday next Shannon green will be officially opened, when it is anticipated that two or three rinks ol‘ local bowlers will be present. Palmerston N. green will also be opened on the same day, when a couple of local rinks will make the journey. Members desirous of making either trip are advised to put their names on the notice board in the pavilion. Levin Club open their green on Labour Day, 24th inst., and have extended an invitation to local players.

The Pahiatua Club formally opened their green on Saturday, in unfavourable weather, only part of a game being played before it was necessary to abandon the game on account of the rain.

CROQUET.

The President of the Bowling Club officially opened the local croquet courts yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a large number of local and visiting ladies. During Hie afternoon a very pleasant time was spent, a fifteen-minutes’ tournament being held, the winners being:—A’s, Mrs Kirk, Levin; B’s, Miss A. Spoil's.
