THE LOUVAIN LIBRARY

GERMAN RESTORATION GIFT,

All Louvain was beautifully decorated for the ceremony of laying the corner stone of the new library of its University. This monument, which will replace the famous 500-year-old building which was burnt by the Germans in August, 1914, is the gift of America to Belgium; But what will never be replaced was the great collection of manuscripts and of theological works, the most famous in the world, which were reduced to ashes. The reconstruction of the Library of Louvain, which includes 320,000 volumes of manuscript, offers a fine example of universal solidarity. Funds have chiefly come from America, Great Britain and France, but no fewer than 33 nations,92 universities, and 35 academies from all parts of the world have contributed to its reconstruction. Even Germany, which was not invited to contribute, has sent an important selection of books.
