THE PRICE OF BUTTER.
A correspondent writes complaining of the retail price of butter charged locally, viz.j 2s 5d per lb., and asks (lie reason, in view of the fact that first grade butter can be procured in other towns at 2d per lb. cheaper. Our representative waited upon a local retailer yesterday, and was informed that the butter landed at the store cost 2s 2d per lb. He said 3d per lb. was a fair charge for overhead He Ridded further that the Wakaronga Factory was retailing butter in Palmerston at 2s 2d per lb., and that the price of Shannon butter, per factory, was 2s Id per lb. A director of the Shannon Factory informed us that a meeting was to be held this week to review the prices. He said one firm was buying at 2s Id per lb., and retailing same on the Wellington market at 2s 2d per lb.
This morning we were informed that the local i*efail price of butter is 2s 2d per lb. Wellington, Yesterday.
A reduction was made in the local wholesale price of butter to-day. Standard brands are retailing at 2s Id per pound. The retail price opened on Ist September at 2s 5d per pound. It was reduced on the 19th to 2s 4d, and the latest reduction makes a fall of 4d per pound since Ist September. Buttey is lower in price in Wellington to-day than in any other of' the principal centres.

The price of butter has been reduced to 2s wholesale, and 2s 2d retail —a drop of 2d.
