ALLEGED FALSE MISREPRESENTATION.

AN “INCOME-TAX BOOK.”

Invercargill, Sept. 21. At the Orepuki Court yesterday, Maurice J. W. Smith was committed for trial, bail being allowed, on charges of obtaining £5 from each of two farmers by falsely representing that he was an’-official of the Income Tax Department, and that the law required them to purchase a book entitled “New Zealand Farmers’ Complete Book-keeper,” the price of which was £5.

He was further charged with attempting to obtain money from eight others by means of similar representation. It was shown that accused has no connection with the department.
