ESCAPED PRISONER
.Ashburton Yesterday
A prisoner escaped „ from the north-bound express yesterday, about 3.40 while the train was stationary near the Ashburton cemetery. The escapee was last heard of at 5 o’clock yesterday, when he was inquiring for clothes. He was on a bicycle, a mile from the railway. The police are still searching, but have not revealed the identity of the prisoner, who was recently sentenced at Dunedin. He was proceeding in custody of a single constable to Paparoa prison. The escapee is described as of light build, sft, Gin. in height, and unshaven.

The prisoner who escaped from Ashburton was' William Herbert Chapman, under sentence of six months for theft of clothing, etc.
