FOOTBALL

Referring to the Wellington N.S. Wales match at Wellington on Wednesday last, the Post says:

A regrettable feature of the game was the rough play indulged in by some members of flic visiting team, the use of fists in the scrum being plainly observed. Wellington’s two-front-rankers appeared to be having a hard time, and the fists flew so freely at one stage that the referee had to severely caution the offenders. As already mentioned, even tho manager of the visiting team could not refrain from rushing on to the field, apparently with a view to reprimanding those of his team who had resorted to such tactics. In open play there was also obstruction, and this, too, brought from the crowd a distinct expression of disapproval. One such offence cost the visitors three points. Hutchison and Roberts were both temporarily disabled through being “dumped” after getting rid of the ball. The occurrences placed a blot on the visitors’ record as good sportsmen.
