POSTAL OFFICER’S LAPSE.
ADMITTED TO PROBATION.
At the Supreme Court at Palmerston on Tuesday afternoon, before His Honour Mr Justice Hiking, Herbert Choto appeared sentence, having pleaded guilty to two charges of theft, that on March 16th, and again on April 2nd, at Dannevirke, he, being a postal officer, did steal postal packets containing £3 and £1 10s respectively.
His Honour said that he had received the report of the probation officer. The case was one that showed that prisoner had made rather a bad start in life, and but for the very clear account q£ his history and disposition of the witness, Air Quigley, he would have dealt with him somewhat differently. In his opinion the case warranted and justified the extension of the. Probation Act. He would be admitted to probation for three years under the usual statutory conditions, and in addition lie must take out a prohibition order and pay the costs of the prosecution within one week.
