BOROUGH WORKS

ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT

The Road Foreman submitted the following report at last night's Council meeting:— “During the past month the road staff have been engaged on the following works: Carting, spreading and breaking metal on Avenue Road, also patching up ruts Moutoa Road and Cook Street; cleaning drain, Reeve Street, and clearing slips and rubbish from drains in Avenue Road, Johnston and Russell Streets; working with road grader on Union Street, clearing and effecting temporary repairs to culvert, Johnston Street, The metal ordered for road repair has all come to hand, and has been spread on the various roads mentioned in my reports, with the exception of a few trucks stored in the Council yard for patching. V e have also now coining to hand metal for Avenue Road kerbing, and this is being carted for that work. The rough weather during last week prevented us doing much work with the road grader, but we hope to complete the grading in two or three more days, weather and circumstances permitting. Re the blocked culvert in Johnston Street: This is from Mr Ca r monk's property. The water and drainage people took this for a disused culvert, and chopped out the section crossed by their trench. Consequently, with the heavy rain Inst week there was trouble. We must put in a new culvert when the dry season comes again. Another old culvert crossing Russell Street, from Tliynue Street, is apparently blocked, and I think will also have to he replaced with pipes. I strongly recommend that the water and drainage staff he instructed to lam the sand when filling in cross trenches. At any rate, across footpaths, as we have lately had some dangerous ruts to deal with.”
