SHIPPING TO THE PORT
FURTHER REPLIES FROM SHIP-OWNERS.
The Chamber of Commerce has received the following further replies from ship-owners re sending vessels to trade with the Foxton port: — From Messrs Levin and Co. (Wellington) “On behalf of our Head Office we have to acknowledge your circular letter of the 11th inst., re sending vessels to this port. The s.s. Kennedy is the only steamer at our disposal that is in any way suitable for the. trade. Our experience, however, even with hex’, has been such that it has been quite impracticable for us to keep her regularly on the run, much as it has been our desire to do so. This has been because both the bar and river have been in such a had state as to make it both dangerous and unrenmnerative to run regularly here, but should the port become more easily negotiated we think the ‘Kennedy’ would he seen more frequently at the Foxton wharf. Just now we may state that the bar has considerably improved, as the result of the recent flood, and should it remain so, no doubt it will be an inducement for the vessel to trade here more often.”
From Messrs Cathie Dempster and Co. (Wellington) “In reply to your letter addressed to the Kaiapoi Shipping and Trading Co., Ltd., regarding the s.s. ‘Wootton’ making trips to Foxton. We have to advise on account of the Kniapoi Company, that while the “Wootton’ is thoroughly suitable for your bar at FoxInn, at present she is fully occupied in the Lyttelton-Wellington run.”
