of the executive. Mr Ahern was the Club’s first caretaker. He would also include In the motion a vote of sympathy to Dr. Maudl in the loss he had recently sustained. The motion was carried in silence, all pre-

sent standing. In moving the adoption yf the n

The at

tendance showed a marked improve

ment, as was evidenced by the in creased gate receipts. Membershi had increased by 40 to 50 per ceni during the past three years. He re ferred to the increased taxation ]>ai to the Government, Next year th Club would he deprived of totalise tor fractions. In his opinion, racin' clubs were paying more Ilian the: fair proportion of taxation. Refer ring to the visit of the Racing Com mission, and the application for ai additional permit, -the presiden, said there was no hope of the laltei

and they wore fortunate in heiit able to retain the present raein

days in view of the restrictions. II paid a tribute to the club officials and to the secretary for the elos

attention they bad given to thei; duties, and congratulated Mr Jewell, one of the Club stewards, npoi being elected as one of the representatives on the Country Clubs Association. He felt sure that AL Jewell would do his best to safeguard the interests of country clubs Mr Jewell, in seconding the moli on, endorsed the remarks of the president. He -aid the results of tin past year had exceeded theirjnos! sanguine expectations, and he felt sure that further progress would In made in the year- to conic, by reason of the accessibility of the Foxton meeting. In his opinion, tin Foxton meeting would develop intone of the most important on this coast. In referring to i ! <- Racing

Commission’s report, he -aid country clubs had asked for an inereasi of 112 permits, and while trolling clubs and bunt clubs bad been treated liberally, only an increase of It! permits had been granted lo country

lulis, and ibis Club bad been fm-tu late, in-vcw of all that bad hup

The Sccrciary, in reply to Air A. X. Smillt. gave a detailed explanation of expenditure, after which the report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

The following ollicers were electil for the ensuing year: Patron, Air . Robinson (re-elected): president,

Air J. If. Whyte (re-elected) presidents, Messrs Dr. Mandl, W. E. Barber, 0. and G. Robinson (re-el-ected) ; treasurer, Air R. Bryant. (As Air Bryant was nominated as a steward, it was decided that his- position as treasurer would obviate his election as a steward, and give him the same privileges, and make

the number of stewards nine exclusive of the treasurer. His nomination for a steward was withdrawn). Judge, Air ■]. AI. Cameron (re-elect-ed); handieapper. AH ,J. E. Ueiirys (re-elected); starter. Air Angus Keith (re-elected): clerk of scales, Air J. E. Burr (re-elected) : timekeeper, Ah- Alt', Alah'in (re-elected); auditor. Mr I>. It. Ogilvic, There were six nominations for three

stewards, namely. .Messrs Burr, Earl Bryant, W. Xeylon, 0. Pearson, A. X. Smith, and F. D. Wbibley. The result of the ballot was: —C. Pearson 54, Burr 53, W. Xey-

n 45, F. D. Whibley ?6, Earl Bry-

ant 28, A. N. Smith 19. Alessrs Pearson, Burr and Xeylon were declared elected. XOTICE OF AIOTIOX.

In accordance with notice previously given, Air Whibley moved as follows: —“That'Pule 22 be rescinded and the following substituted: That at every annual meeting the president, vice-presidents, treasurer, and all members of committee,

shall retire, but shall be eligible for re-election, provided they are again nominated as provided hereunder. Nominations for these positions

sholl close with the Secretary n^p<C later than July 10th in each year,''' He said that he would content himself with formally moving the motion, and would reserve any remarks he desired to make until his reply. Mr Edwards seconded the motion.

Mr Jewell raised a point of order. Ho said that the motion had been moved at the annual meeting, i m been defeated by a majority of three to one. Then at the special general meeting in March Mr AVhibley had again moved the motion, and had been again defeated. According to the rules a motion could not be rescinded during the year in which it was put on the books, and therefore this motion would not be in order until the end of the current year.

Air Whibley said that Air Jewell’s statement in reference to the special meeting was absolutely incorrect. He had attempted to move the motion at that meeting, but Alt- Jewell had objected on the ground that the matter had been decided at the annual meeting, and could not he brought up at the special meeting. The chairman (Mr Barber) had ruled in favour of Air Jewell, and the motion was consequently not put. Air AA'hibloy said that after the special meeting he bad considered whether he should not write to lhe Registrar under the Unclassified Societies Ad and object to the registration of the rules, on the ground that he had been prevented from moving bis motion at that meeting, which was specially called to consider the rules. Had he done this there was no doubt that the Registrar would have refused to register the rules. However, he decided rather than make a fuss about it, he would leave it over, and move at this meeting. It appeared to him that some of the stewards were anxious to retain their seals at any price, lienee the objection to his motion. Mr Barber said he remembered ruling something out of order at the meeting referred to, Imt was under the impression it was Rule Iff, not the rule now under discussion. * Air Whibley said that if they refused to accept his motion lie would wait until the end of the financial year.and then have a special meeting called lo consider it. The chairman then said he would accept the motion. Air Jewell spoke at length against the motion. He said that most other clubs had a similar rule, and also in dairy and other companies it was usual for only a certain number of the directors to retire each year. He considered a very serious position might arise if all the stewards were defeated in any year, and a new set elected. Mr Whibley, in reply, said that lie knew a number of dub.- where all the stewards retired each year, and were eligible for re-election. The most important body in the country —Parliament —the whole of the*' members retired at one time, as also did members of borough and city councils, harbour and hospital board.-, and if it was good enough for important bodies like these, it was surely good euotigb for the Foxton Racing Club, Air .Jewell had talked about what would happen if till the sitting stewards were defeated, but the speaker pointed out that until last year it was I lie rule for all the Foxton stewards Mo retire, and no such position as that mentioned 4y Air .Jewell had ever arisen. If it should happen that all the stewards were defeated it would show that there was something radically wrong with their administration, and that they deserved to be put onl. Personally lie wa- quite easy about I lie matter, bis reason for moving the motion being that, be considered that when the matter was previously before (lie members a large number of them were not clear about it. and he desired to give them another opportunity to vote on it.

The chairman rose to speak, and Mr Whibley immediately objected, on the ground licit if he had anything to say he should have spoken before the mover replied. The ehaiyman -aid he just wi-lied to point out that in the ease of Borough Councils the members were in olliee for two years, and in county councils three yen in —no| one year, as laid down in (he present ease. The motion was then put, and on a show of hands was lost, the voting lining two to one against it. In acknowledging the chairman’s complimentary 'remarks as to the manner in which he had discharged his duties, the secretary said lie had received valuable assistance from AH Sellars,'secretary of the X.Z. Racing Conference. The Club was a real live body, and the stewards were enthusiastic in their work. On the motion of Air Wldhlcy. -ec'•nded by Air Perreau, it was resolved lo grant a donation of 40 guineas lo the Fox ion Fire Brigade, provided there is nothing in the regulations to preclude same. A vole of llmnks to Lk> Chairman concluded the meeting. A meeting of stewards wa> subsequently held, when business of u routine nature was dismissed.
