WANGANUI SENSATION.
BOROUGH COUNCILLORS
RESIGN,
Wanganui, Last Night,
A special meeting of the Borough Council concluded sensationally just before midnight. At the last municipal election a citizens’ ticket, impliedly pledged to prevent the installation of a big steam plant as a stand-by at the tramway powerhouse, was elected, and obtained a majority on the Council. A few meetings ago it was decided to erect a small portion of the plant, and sell the remainder, in order to obtain funds with which to reticulate the town. Since then three members of (he citizens’ ticket have become supporters of the big scheme, and by (heir change of front the opponents of the citizens’ ticket gained a majority. To-night a motion rescinding the resolution to instal a small portion was carried in favour of one to put in the whole plant, to cost over £BO,OOO. The remaining members of the citizens’ ticket have handed in their resignations, intimating that they will seek re-election. Some striking developments are expected.
