THE HUMAN MIND

The human mind is not wholly

conscious. That is to say, certain of its functions are performed independently of the reason or will of the individual. In sleep, the eoneiousness is in abeyance. The subconsciousness, on the oilier hand, never sleeps, but is continuously alert from birth to death. Many of our waking actions, too, are inspired by the subconsciousness; and if we. reason about them at all it is merely to explain them. It is the activity of the subconsciousness which enables a person to wake up at a particular hour decided upon overnight; that enables him to lake note of passing phenomena on a walk without having to think of the muscular movements involved in walking; limit bring:* I lie forgotten phrase or name off his tongue when tiu effort of deliberate recollection will do so. A good many of the physiological functions are under the control of this sub-conscious department of the mind, and are performed, as we say, involuntarily. 'The reason or will is often at variance with the subconsciousness. The relation between them is very much that of a new and inexperieneei. overseer who is pul in charge of old and experienced workmen engaged upon tasks the details of which are as familiar to them as are the surroundings in which they work.
