HOROWHENUA DEFEATS RANGITIKEI.
The senior representative match Horowhenua v. Rangitikei was played at Bulls yesterday afternoon. The weather conditions were favourable, and the ground in good or-
der. The game was an interesting *one throughout, and the scores when the whistle blew were Horowhenua 8, Rangitikei 3. Rangitikei had the best of the first spell, getting the ball consistently from the scrums, and they drew first blood about fifteen minutes after play commenced, through one of the Horowhenua backs miskicking the ball, which rebounded and was gathered in by a Rangitikei player, who crossed the line practically unopposed. There was, no further score in the first spell. In the second half the Horowhenua scrum was much better, and they hooked the ball fairly regularly. Practically all this spell was in favour of the visitors, who scored two tries, one being converted. W hen the whistle sounded Horowhenua was .still attacking. Mr Nicholson controlled the game.

At Monday night’s meeting of the Manawatu Rugby Fnion. held at Palmerston N., Mr Bardie brought* up the matter of the practising of the Ilorowhenna and Manawatu combined team to play the Springboks on August 17th. He thought that it would be unfair to the players, as well as the public, to play the match without a fair amount of practice. It was also stated that the oilier towns had assembled Hieii t tains before the match and had put in « week’s hard practice. Mr )ifil'dic was authorised to endea\out |o arrange for the match with llorowlienua I" he played on August (ith. instead of August 13th, as previously decided upon, so that ample practice may be had. If the previous arrangements are agreed upon, Mr Bardie was also given power to act in arranging for a match with the. combined team and Wellington on August 13th.
Mr A. E. Neilson, of Wellington, who was referee of the SpringboksWalignum match, speaks in high praise of the manner in which the visitors conduct themselves on the Held. Their whole idea seemed to centre upon playing a good, clean game of football; their play was very clean, and their sportsmanship of high quality. He had also specially noted that they never called “mark” for a fair catch off a forward pass; neither had they passed any remarks about decisions.
