S BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night.

CORRESPONDENCE.

Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: —

From W. G. Nye, stating that in view of the statement made by the Mayor at last Council meeting, that pipes for gas services were charged for only from the fence, he enclosed his account for adjustment, as lie had been charged from the main, which was on the opposite side of the road to his residence. Furthermore, the service pipe from the main to Ids residence also supplied his nPighliQUr, and yet he understood that he alone was paying for the pipe service. Also that this hardly seemed fair to him, as tho pipe from Ids fence to the meter was only eleven feet, whereas according to the account, he was charged for 'about (10 feet.

The Mayor said he did not remember making the statement that service pipes were charged for from the fence. He pointed out that previously it had been the custom, but had since been altered, and service connections were charged from the main. He also pointed out that Mr Nye had been charged half cost only from the main, the oilier half being paid by his neighbour.

Or. Martin said the Mayor had made the statement credited to him at a previous meeting, in answer to questions lie (Cr. Martin) had submitted.

The Clerk was authorised to reply to Mr Nye, explaining the Council's position.

Erom the Moutoa Drainage Board, slating that the timber offered to the Council bad been sold. Erom the Horowhenua County Council, stating that as they have only one road grader in use, which is constantly required, they arc unable to hire same to the Council. Erom G. P. Walker, stating that he is unable to undertake the work of foiling trees at the cemetery.

Decided that, subject to a guarantee of £IOO against any damage being done to the graves and fences, Mr W. T. Smith’s tender for felling and removing trees from the cemetery for the sum of £lO he accepted. TENDERS,

The Council went into committeo to discuss tenders for. collecting tank in connection with the sewerage system. Tenders were received from firms in Dunedin, Wellington, and Palmerston. On resuming in open Council, it was decided that no tender be accepted for the 75,000 gallon reservoir, and that the engineer's recommendation re reducing the size of the collecting tank to one of 10,000 gallons, he adopted, and that two further artesian wells be sunk. Also that tenders be called for the construction of 10,000 gallon tank.

LIBRARY COMMITTEE

The Library Committee reported that it would he advisable to rent a room from Mr Reid to be used as a. library, and to advertise for a custodian.

Cr Coley moved an amendment to the report, that the library he transferred to Mr Patterson's premises, and that his (laughter be npiiointed librarian.

The amendment was lost by .5 to 3, and the report adopted. MOTOR CAR LICENSES.

Cr, Whibley asked whether an unlicensed car owner who advertises that lie is prepared to carry passengers is liable for the license fee?

It was decided to refer the matter to tho Association’s solicitor for an opinion.
