COTTAGE DESTROYED BY FIRE.

The fire syren aroused the public at about 0.30 last night, when a flare was noticed at the top end of the Avenue. The scene of the confla-gration-was a cottage owned by Mr tV. Aldridge, and occupied by Miami Mrs Chas. Robinson. The occupants had retired for the night, and were aroused by Mrs Aldridge, who noticed the fire from her residence nearby. Some of the personal effects and furniture were saved, but the building was totally destroyed. There was no insurance on the house or effects, and the loss is estimated at £2OO. The cause of the fire is supposed to have been a defective chimney. The brigade turned out, but upon its arrival the fire had too firm a hold on the building to be of any use.
