MIRACLES IN MENDING.
The tremendously high price of new goods has forced people to make shift with old ones, and such old things must be kept tidy and whole.
New industries in repairing have arisen since the war. Advertisements may be seen from linns which make a speciality of turning men's suits and overcoats. Oil the lace of this it seems an impossible job, for either the buttons and buttonholes must all he reversed, or they will surely show. But no. The button-holes and the slits of the breast pocket are woven up. The work is done by girls who use fine thread exactly matching the colours of flic stuffs. So well do they do their work Mini, even with a strong magnifying glass, il is difficult to discover the original position of the woven-up buttonhole.
There is a firm which, working on similar lines, will renovate a shabby room without re-papering or-paint-ing. They have some special process for cleaning the old paint, and as for the wallpaper, if it- lie torn or stained, they will either patch it so skilfully Unit the joint cannot be seen, or else —more wonderful still —paint in the original design by hand.
Renovating soft felt hats is becoming a considerable industry. It doesn’t matter if the hat is utterly out of shape, dirty and greasy, it can be rcblocked, relined and made exactly like new for about a fourth of wliaf it would cost to buy a new one. Glass and china are also being mended by new and dainty processes.
