BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING,
The annual meeting of the Foxton Beautifying Society was held in the Town Ha'll supper-room on Tuesday night, presided over by Mr Perrean. There was an attendance of thirteen present, and several apoligies for absence were received. The Chairman reported upon the work done by the sub-com-mittee appointed to deal with matters in connection with the old cemetery and Easton Park. Tenders had been accepted for the erection
of a concrete fence at the old cemc- , tery, and the work would be commenced this week. Noxious weeds had been grubbed out, and the material was ready for the erection of a dividing and shelter fence. A tender had been accepted for ploughing, levelling and grassing Easton Park, and forming about two chains of roadway at the entrance. The sub-committee had discussed shrubs and hedge plants suitable for planting, and their recommendations would be submitted to the incoming committee. The secretary (Mrs Moore) read the first annual report and balancesheet. The former dealt with the initial steps taken to bring the Society into being, and the method adopted of raising funds, leading up to the Carnival. The membership fee was fixed at 2s Gd per annum, and life members three guineas. Tho Committee conferred with the Borough Council, and decided to improve Easton Park on the plan laid down by Mr Black, of Palmerston North. A fair amount of work was carried out, but owing to the dry weather and late planting the results were not very satisfactory. On top of this, Mr Brack's plant was destroyed in the fire which destroyed the Council Chambers. The fund raised by the Carnival will enable the Society to carry out a comprehensive scheme of permanent improvements, and a i-üb-comniittcc-has already carried out certain duties approved by the Society and Council. At present the Society is concentrating on Easton Park, and the old cemetery, and certain sum-/ have been allocated for expenditure in this connection. The public and Borough Council is sympathetic with the Society’s operations, and the money raised will be expended to the best advantage. The receipts for the year ending March 31st wore £147 8s Bd, and the expenditure £B9 14s Bd, leaving a credit balance of £57 14s. This, added to (he Carnival fund, would enable the Society to make a good start this vear.
Mr Moorhouse, in moving the adoption of the report and balancesheet, said the Society was to bo congratulated upon its first year. The report did not do justice to all the work which had been accomplished. It was very gratifying to know that the public and Borough Council were backing up the Society’s efforts, and as a result of such co-operation there was no reason to doubt that good work would be accomplished in the future, which would be to Foxtons’ advnnt-
a fix 1 . The Chairman endorsed Mr Moor-< house’s remarks, and said the Committee had been very enthusiastic and had worked harmoniously. The public had responded generously with financial assistance, and hd was sure they were satisfied with the work done. A number of citizens had promised to donate seats to be placed in Easton Park and the old cemetery, and he hoped that at least 40 would be donated. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers were as as in follows: —Patron, Mr A. S. Easton; * president, Mr M. E. Perreau; vicepresidents, Mesdames F. Robinson and A. S. Easton, Messrs Moorhouse and T. W. Hunt; secretary, Mrs R. Moore; treasurer, Mr Trueman; auditor, Mr W. Bock; committee, Mesdames P. Easton, McMurray, Halliday, F. Procter, Green, Pearson, Messrs Rev. Hnllidav, Poole, Christie, Hornblow, Admoro, and C. Symons. It was decided to carry out work on a defined plan, and for this purpose it was resolved to write to the Palmerston Borough Council, and endeavour to obtain the sexwices of Mr Black to lay out a plan for Easton Park and the old cemetery, and a Committee consisting of Mesdames Robinson, Moore, A. S. Easton, and Mr Hornblow, were appointed a sub-committee to confer with Mr Bock in reference to details. The usual, votes of thanks concluded the meeting.
