THE WHITTA CASE.

NO MITIGATION OF SENTENCE.

Christchurch, June 6,

The following letter was received on Saturday from the Hon. E. C. Lee, Minister of Justice: “I have the honour to inform you that I have given very careful consideration to the petition praying that William Witta be given the option of paying a fine, or that a substantial reduction be made in his sentence, and also to the representations made by the delegation to the Acting Prime Minister and myself in support of the petition with reference to substituting a tine for the sentence. 1 find that this cannot now be done, and 1 regret that I am unable to recommend any reduction of the sentence which was imposed by the Supreme Court."
