DORCAS SOCIETY.
The annual meeting of the Dorcas Society was held in All Saints’ sehooiroom yesterday afternoon. The annual report and balancesheet was read and adopted, 'report'was as follows: —
“The Society has had a busy year, and since September has been working under difficulties. In the fire which destroyed the Council Chambers we lost all our working materials, including three sewing machines and two large boxes of clothing which had just been repaired and put in order in readiness for future calls for assistance. Since then we have received seven appeals for help, and have been able to supply these by doing the sewing in our own homes. Nearly three hundred garments, boots, etc., were sent out during the year, and numerous grateful letters were received, which show that these were appreciated. We start our new year with very little in hand in either money or clothing, and we again appeal to the public for assistance in either way. Parcels may be left at Mr A. N. Smith’s shop, Main Street, Toxton. We are indebted to the Anglican Ladies’ Guild for the use of their guild room for storing and packing;'to Mrs Walton for the use of tin trunk, and to Mrs Hawke and Airs Hamer for relieving the Society of the responsibility of replacing the sewing machines lent by them and destroyed in {lie. tire, and also to the many sympathisers with our work, who helped with parcels and money. We are especially indebted to Mrs Hammond, of Oroua Downs, who collected a large parcel which enabled us to meet an urgent call, and to the Press for giving all possible help.”
The balance-sheet showed the receipts for the year, including cash in hand 10s, to be £3 10s 3d, and the expenditure £2 12s 2ld, leaving a balance in hand of £1 3s 10Ad. Mrs F.
