THE OLD CEMETERY.
BEAUTIFYING SCHEME TO BE CARRIED OUT,
The Sub-Committee appointed by the local Beautifying Society to carry out the Society’s recommendations in connection with the old cemetery, met on Thursday afternoon. Mr M. Perreau (president) occupied the elutir, and there were present: Messrs Furrie, Ilornblow, Symons, and Trueman. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Moorhouse and Poole. The chairman reported that a deputation had waited upon the Borough Council, and submitted the Society’s recommendations re work on Eastou Park and the old cemetery. In connection with the former, nothing would he decided until the Council's Reserves Committee had met. It was resolved to concentrate at once on improvements to the' old cemetery. After some discussion it was resolved to call tenders for the erection of the concrete fence 'at per chain. The question of gates was held over, but it was decided to leave a space of 6ft. 3in. for the entrance at the corner. Tenders to close at -1 p.m. on Tuesday, 21st instant.
The president was authorised to obtain labour for the erection of a shelter and dividing fence on the western boundary, and to clear the section of noxious weeds, etc.
It was resolved to ask the Council to continue the footpath along Ravensworth Place, in order to complete the effect of the fence.
The question of planting and further improvements was held over until tin inspection had been made of suitable flowering shrubs, etc.
