PADDON WINS AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP." Sydney, April 30. In the sculling race Ladder, and McDevitt got away on even terms, and sculled .practically together till the three-quarters of a mile point was reached. McDevitt rowed a fast stroke, but Paddons’ long, sweeping stroke now began to tell, and at the mile he led by a length. After that tho race was all Paddon’s. He never seemed to vary his stroke much, whereas McDevitt raced off at his usual rate. Threequarters of a mile from home Paddon was leading by live lengths. McDevitt livened up, and made a determined attack, which he continued-! ill the finish, when he was beaten by four lengths. Time. 19.40,
ARNST RECEIVES ANOTHER CHALLENGE. Blenheim, Yesterday. Dick Artist received on Saturday a challenge on behalf of Darcy Hadfield, in the event of Arnst defeating Hannan, to row on the Wanganui River. Arnst replied “Yes, if sufficient inducement offered.” Hadfield further telegraphed stating that a challenge was being forwarded. Interviewed. Arnst says the race will be won or lost on Wairau River. He likes that water, and will stick to it if he wins, and if the “gate” is satisfactory.
