PATEA BY-ELECTION.

REFORM VICTORY. Ilawera, April 13. The by-election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Mr W. D. Powdrcll, M.P. for Patea, was held to-day. The weather was unsettled, heavy rain falling at midday. Polling was heavy. Labour failed badly, its official candidate only securing 54G votes. Absent voters to the number of 187 exercised their rights, and there were about 100 votes bv declaration.

Polling resulted in a victory for Mr Edwin Dixon, the Reform candidate, whose majority over the Liberal candidate was 245. The result of the polling was as under: — Edwin Dixon (Reform) 2822 William Morrison (Liberal) 2,577 Lewis Mcllvride (Labour) 546 Majority for Dixon 245
