(To the Editor.) Sir. —If you will allow me space, I would like to express my feelings regarding employment on the water and drainage works. Prior to. the start applicants for work were asked to put their names in at the office, at the Town Hall. A number of men, about 50 or 60, I believe, did so, and were told they would be liued up and picked out.. Nothing of the kind happened, and as far as names were concerned it was a farce. Now, Sir, I was told on the job that I would be given a start übout three weeks ago, and have been continually turned down day after day, and being told that “no more would be required to-day,” and next minute see my mates put on. Whether I am a ’’Jonah” I don’t know, but I think a man waiting about'the job three weeks should at least get a show, or get satisfaction one way or the other. I have been in Foxton fourteen years', and reared my family of five here, and Foxton has had all I’ve been •able to earn, so I think it’s up to somebody with inlluence to see fair play, and to see that a man willing to work should get a chance to earn a living in the town in which he resides. There are certain jobs obtainable on the particular works which do not require the services of a navvy, which I do not profess to be. Trusting this letter will do some good to others in my position, —I am, etc., STILL WAITING.
