CARNIVAL NOTES.
The following are the winners' in the Fancy Stall competitions:— Black cat cushion, 593 (nearest guess, 585), Madge Patterson; hand-painted cushion, P. M. Page (48). A special word of praise is 10“ Mrs S. Easton, who assiste»J|P the Coronation grouping and other details in connection with the Coronation. Those responsible for the stage decorations for the Coronation ceremony were: Mrs F. and Misses Robinson (2), Messrs D, Christie, Rev. Walton, Poole, H. Fraukland, C. Spiers, F. S. Moorhouse, under the direction of Organiser and Mrs Reid.
Owing to Council duty, Mr True- . man, carnival treasurer, was unable to be present to receive honours at the Coronation ceremony, when it was intended to make public recognition of his splendid services. The Secretary, Mr Roore Rangilieua, the indefatigable secretary, although commanded to appear, refused to face the public ordeal.
We are unable to publish a complete list of the names' of all the little girls who took part in the ceremony in time for insertion in the official programme. Some of those upon whom honours were conferred were also omitted, as the names were added after the programme was printed.
The correct order of precedence of Maids of Honour were: Miss Eileen Bowe (Fanners), Miss Elise King (Fibre), Miss Thurza Healey (Sports), and Miss Bella "McGregor (Native). The door takings for the Coronation totalled £sl Is Od. It is to be regretted that arrangements were not made to have a Hash-light photograph taken of the Coronation setting. The Carnival Committee, however, arranged to have the queens photographed, and to present each queen with a dozen copies of same. The following is a list of raffles drawn and winning names in connection with the Citizens’ Queen Committee: —Child's dress, A. Tollison; humpty, D. Ogilvie; painted cushion, W. McKnight; nightdress, Mrs R. Bryant; tricycle, G. King; deck chair, 11, Curran; rose bowl, Mrs Trueman, e.p. teaspoons, Mrs Huntley; kewpie, Mrs Kirkley; table centre, Mrs Ball; music ease. M, Connelly; hand bag, Mrs 11. Berry; name of boat, “Ruahine,” E. Westwood and 11, Nixon. Those who have not received their prizes requested to call at A. N. Smith shop as early as possible. Mr J. Gokler desires us to state that he regrets having declined the honour of being knighted “Court Jester” at the Coronation ceremony, owing to a misapprehension that lie would have to forego the position of Court Trumpeter. Charlie Chaplin would willingly have paid a thousand pounds to be able to successfully imitate the eccentric bodily movement of one of our esteemed citizens while making his obesiance for coronation honours on Thursday night. The audience was convulsed. A good deal of complaint was made by the public at the delay in opening the Town Hall doors on Coronation night. The subsequent crush to gain admission to the hall caused much personal inconvenience, and in some eases the loss of temper, A full report of the Coronation ceremony appears on page 1 of this issue.
